01. Know yourself and define your criteria

Start with your WHY. Why do you want to get into franchising? What purpose does that serve for you? What is your personality type, are you an extrovert or introvert? Do you like being in sales? How much time can you put in? Do you like managing people? How much money can you invest? What is your risk tolerance? What kind of customers would you prefer to deal with? Are there certain businesses that you absolutely don’t want to be in? It is important to actually get to know yourself and answer these questions. They will help define your objectives and create a framework that you can use when researching franchise companies and identifying those that meet the objectives. Clarity of thought in this phase will help reduce time wasted later in the process. Once you have built a solid foundation in this phase, it’s time to open the next gate.

02. Identify franchisors that match your criteria

Once you clarify your criteria, you can start to research franchise options. It is important to understand the characteristics of the various franchise industries before honing in on specific companies. Some will require a brick-and-mortar set up, some can be operated from home. Some will require a significant amount of time, while others would offer you a semi-absentee role. Some might have a heavy sales & marketing component to them, some won’t. Many times, I see that clients are too quick to jump to specific franchise brand names without understanding their business characteristics. And, because those characteristics don’t match their personal criteria defined in the first phase, they keep returning to the drawing board. After gaining a solid understanding of the franchisors’ business characteristics you have selected, it is time to open the next gate.

03. Investigate the franchisors

This is the step where you start engaging with the franchise companies. In this step, it is important that you begin with a blank sheet of paper and are completely free of bias and prejudice. I have watched clients overlook some great business opportunities because of a personal predisposition. In reality, these clients just didn’t have enough knowledge about the opportunity. It is easy to fall into the trap of “I don’t know enough about it, so I’m just going to ignore it.” Instead, you want to approach this phase with the attitude of “I don’t know enough, and I am open to learning more.” It is easy to reject an opportunity at a later time, once you understand it well.
You also want to use a structured approach for the investigation process. Learn the details about the support a franchisor will provide you – real estate, build-out, operations, marketing, software platforms, customer acquisition, recruiting, vendor relationships, and a host of other items are important to investigate. In this phase, you also want to talk to other franchisees in the same system, so you can get a feel for what “a day in the life of a franchisee” looks like, and can validate questions about franchisor support, potential start-up challenges, day-to-day operations, financial targets, etc. If your research sources are simply Googling a company or visiting its website, that is not a thorough way to investigate. Once you have achieved a solid understanding of each franchisor, it becomes time to open the fourth gate.

04. Identify the best fit and commit

By the time you reach this phase, you will have gone through several information sessions, webinars, and discussions with a handful of franchisors and franchisees within their systems. You will have reviewed their Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDD). Hopefully, you will have attended one or more Discovery Days as well and met the senior executives of the franchise companies. Most people will start to get a good feel for their suitable fit. Now is the time for the decision. There is possibly apprehension and fear. You could also fall into the analysis-paralysis trap. It’s helpful to remind yourself that you have already answered questions about whether business ownership is for you, your personality, your risk-taking ability, your personal and financial objectives, etc., and have already arrived at a good business fit. It is important that you trust your own hard work and the research you have put in. Once you have decided to take the leap, it’s time to open the last gate.

05. Financing your business

Although you would have given some thought to your personal finances in phase one and started to do some preliminary research for financing in parallel with phase three, this is the step when you want to seriously start identifying options to finance your business, unless 100% of the investment is coming from your personal sources. There are several sources to consider, like traditional financing from a bank, SBA loans, private lenders that specialize in franchise financing, and 401(k) rollovers, to name a few. All of these have different rates, loan origination costs, terms and conditions, and approval times. It is important that you consult with a finance company that deals in franchise financing to review all your alternatives and options.

01.What is the investment?

02.How much money can I make?

WHEN PEOPLE COME TO US IT LIKE THESE ARE THE ONLY TWO QUESTIONS THEY ASK ABOUT A FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY

What do you think? Are these the only things to consider?

Have you thought about

  • What is the history of the management team?
  • What does the support before, during, and after you invest look like?
  • Are you OK using a big chunk of your capital to build a brick and mortar location or would you rather use it as working capital?
  • Would you like to be tied to a lease or prefer working from home?
  • How much risk can you tolerate?
  • What are the growth plans of the company?
  • What are the character traits of a successful franchisee in the system? Does your personality match these?
  • Do you care if the business operates nights and weekends or would you prefer a business that operates Mon-Fri 9am-5pm?
  • What is the strength and financial stability of the company?
  • Who is going to oversee the day to day operations - you, a partner, your spouse?
